Following the decision announced last week by Heinz Australia to voluntarily remove bisphenol A (BPA) from packaging of its infant foods, Heinz Watties in New Zealand has announced it intends to follow suit.
“Heinz Watties is working in conjunction with the Heinz team in Australia, and will also be moving to BPA-free packaging for baby food products, with canned baby foods to be its first priority,” Heinz Watties general manager, quality, Paddy O’Brien told foodnews.
“While international and New Zealand food authorities have declared BPA in food packaging completely safe, Heinz Wattie’s acknowledges a level of consumer concern about BPA in baby food packaging by introducing this voluntary phase out,” he added.
The voluntary action by food producers in Australia and New Zealand follows regulation against BPA in baby products in Canada, Denmark and France and both the European Food Safety Authority and the USFDA are reconsidering their regulatory stance following recent research confirming the risk of molecular levels of bisphenol A contamination.
“Wattie’s has been New Zealand’s leading and most trusted brand of baby food for more than 50 years and continues to listen and respond to the needs of its customers,” O’Brien added. “While it believes there is no risk to consumers, we are keen to allay any concern and so we have opted to remove BPA from all baby food packaging. The phase out has already begun.”
