There are signs that the huge increase in consumption of energy drinks has peaked, following the latest retail beverage data released by US research company Mintel. After spectacular growth between 2005 and 2007, growth in the sector slowed significantly in the 2007-09 period.

Between 2005 and 2009 sales of energy drinks in the United States grew 136%, but in the last two years the number of energy drink consumers remained flat, at 15% of all adults, according to Mintel.

Mintel says that its data shows that without investing in a programme to attract new customers to the sector, it is likely that global sales of energy drinks will stagnate over the next few years.
