In spite of a stern challenge from the plastics industry, Canada has added bisphenol A (BPA) to the Canadian Register of Toxic Substances.

The move comes following strong representation from the American Chemistry Council, calling for a review of Environment Canada’s position. The ACC claimed that Environment Canada’s decisions on BPA were not “based on the best available data and scientific knowledge”.

In response, the Canadian Minister for the Environment, Jim Prentice said, “I am of the view that your notice does not bring forth any new scientific data or information with respect to the nature and extent of the danger posed by bisphenol A that warrants establishing a board of review in this case, and will therefore not establish a board of review.”

The toxic register listing is expected to be in place within four weeks.
