One of the lesser names of the Champagne trade, Vranken-Pommery Monopole, has stolen a march on its more illustrious neighbours by being the first to release wine in the new, lighter champagne bottle. The company, which makes and markets the Pommery and Heidsieck Monopole brands amongst a portfolio of lesser-ranked champagnes, was the first to respond to the Comité Interprofessionnel de Vins du Champagne’s (CIVC) call to reduce the carbon footprint of champagne packaging.

By reducing bottle weights by 7.5% Vranken-Pommery Monopole has made a positive step towards the CIVC target of a 25% reduction in carbon emissions from the industry.

Champagne bottles are amongst the heaviest in the world, simply because of the high pressure they must contain within each bottle. At around five atmospheres, champagne is amongst the most highly pressurised of all sparkling wines.

Vranken-Pommery Monopole’s new lightweight bottles have started to appear on the market with the release of their latest wines. They are expected to be followed shortly by those brands from the stable of Moët Hennessy, Champagne’s largest producer.
