Kiwifruit trading company Zespri is planning to grow kiwifruit in the Philippines, according to Steven Bunyan, Zespri regional development manager for south east and east Asia. He said the company is looking at possible sites in the Baguio and Bukino regions.

“The challenge is to grow good-quality fruit. Anyone can make it survive because it grows almost like a weed and survives anywhere, but to get good flavour, that’s the difficult task,” Bunyan says.

Zespri, which emerged from the New Zealand grower based Kiwifruit Board, has cooperative relationships with growers in a number of countries, including Italy and China, the world’s largest producers of the fruit. The company continues to be owned by New Zealand kiwifruit growers.
