Consumers in the United Kingdom believe that the days of cheap food are over and that they will have to pay more for grocery essentials in the future. This is according to the latest research into consumer attitudes completed for the UK Crop Protection agency.

The survey showed that while 80% accept that food prices must rise above the historic lows of the recent past, 75% also want greater government involvement in the food market to moderate those increases.

UK Crop Protection Association Dominic Dyer expressed concerns that increased food prices might impact the wider retail community by drawing spending into food costs, at the expense of other retail sectors.

However, he claims that politicians continue to neglect issues of food security, in spite of rising costs and increased red tape for producers.

“The EU remains in a state of denial over food security. Crop yields across Europe are stagnating, and without access to effective crop protection tools we could see a further 40 per cent drop in food production,” he said.
