The giant French-based drinks corporation, Pernod Ricard, has lost an appeal against French journalist Max Coder for slander. Coder claimed in his book  Legal Dealer that the company encourages alcohol abuse amongst its staff in order to increase sales.

Pernod Ricard lost an earlier case against Coder, and took it to appeal, but in a ruling delivered yesterday the French Appellate has found against its claim for €500,000 in damages, and awarded Coder €2,000 in costs.

The court ruled that Pernod Ricard had not provided any proof that Coder’s claims of institutional alcohol abuse within the company were false.

Pernod Ricard owns Brancott Estate and Stoneleigh amongst a wide range of New Zealand wine brands, as well as the Australian Jacobs Creek.
