Seeka Kiwifruit Industries believes that the Psa disease attacking our country’s kiwifruit crops is not as widespread as people might think. The company has said this following a study it had carried out by the University of Otago, which found one of the strains of Psa thought to be in the Hawke’s Bay, Motueka and Golden Bay areas was but a distant relative of the disease, and in fact not a threat to the industry.

This means there is only one strain of the disease – the virulent type, Psa V, which has been found only in the Bay of Plenty.

From the research, Seeka may now be able to develop a solution to the Psa problem.
