Hellers’ free-farmed middle and ribeye bacon, which was launched earlier this year, has won the Convenience and Meal Solutions Award at the New Zealand Food Awards, in the category of Food Product Innovation.
This is further proof the best bacon in New Zealand comes from Christchurch and follows the gold medal success of Hellers and other local butchers in this year’s 100 per cent New Zealand Bacon competition.
Hellers’ founder and director Todd Heller said he is thrilled with the Award as it recognises Hellers’ commitment to developing its own new products, flavours, technology and packaging.
“We did a lot of research to ensure our bacon was the product of choice for consumers because we know people are taking a greater interest in where their food comes from. Our free farmed bacon is not only the best presented bacon on the shelf, but it cooks beautifully and it’s grown in circumstances people can feel good about,” he says.
Hellers’ free-farmed bacon is 100% New Zealand grown and manuka smoked. It is sourced and selected from New Zealand farms where there are no crates or stalls and the pigs are free to move around. The special ribeye cut bacon is a rindless premium pork cut from the shoulder, and is an exclusive Hellers’ product.
The New Zealand Food Awards recognise the creativity and business acumen of companies and people in the food industry – New Zealand’s largest export sector. There are strict criteria for entry and products are judged on technical excellence, taste and packaging. Ray McVinnie, a leading New Zealand cook and food writer, leads the judging panel.
