In a London pinot noir tasting event organised by the German Wine Institute, German wine took out seven of the top 10 placings, with the French selections showing no signs of top quality, and only one New Zealand wine, Felton Road Block 5, squeezing in a number eight.
Wines from 10 pinot noir producing areas were included in the tasting; France, Argentina, Australia, Austria, California, Chile, New Zealand, Oregon, South Africa, and Switzerland.
In spite of its organisational bias in favour of the Germans, USA pinot noirs from Oregon and California won first and second placings. Antica Terra 2009 Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley in Oregon was top, with Au Bon Climat 2008 Isabelle Pinot Noir, a blend of wines from various California regions, second.
